About once a month, Marie-Hélène visits a grade 4 class where little students gather around her on a mat on the floor to see how she’s grown and ask questions.
“Does she sit?”
“Does she crawl?”
“Does she stand?”
“Do you sing her lullabies?”
“Does she have a favorite tv show?”
But it’s the little things that we notice that can’t fit into questions. Like how she loves to cuddle into her blankets, or how she seems to know how to pose for pictures.

Her laugh delights us, and we’ll do peek-a-boo over and over just to hear it.
“Does Marie-Hélène eat food?” She loves rice cereal. Peas make her shudder. Pears are good only in rice cereal. And sweet potato? Not more than a bite.

She’ll squirm in our arms and notice my new earrings. And when a stranger pays her attention: “She’s so small! She’s so cute! What beautiful eyes!”, she sits still and smiles at them, and when they leave, she resumes her squirming. So I bury my nose in her tiny neck, where the little folds smell so good.
