Letter to Grandmaman and Grandpapa

Last Friday, the grade four class at Taché School threw a little party for Marie-Hélène. Since September, we’d been paying monthly visits to a group of about 20 students as part of a national program called Roots of Empathy. From the first visit, when Marie-Hélène was just a little lump, lying on a big green [...]

Prunes

Is there anything, besides chocolate, that is quite as brown as prunes?

She’s learned that rolling gets her places, including underneath our furniture. I raced downstairs to grab the camera, hoping to show you just how perfectly she fits, but she’d already decided it was time to roll on…

because there are just so many things to [...]

6 months 2 weeks

About once a month, Marie-Hélène visits a grade 4 class where little students gather around her on a mat on the floor to see how she’s grown and ask questions.
“Does she sit?”
“Does she crawl?”
“Does she stand?”
“Do you sing her lullabies?”
“Does she have a favorite tv show?”
But it’s the little things that we notice that can’t [...]

Ski inspection

John is going skiing this weekend. Marie-Hélène took the time to inspect the equipment:

Helmet and goggles? Check! And boots and snow blades?

She approves. If she really wanted to steal away with him, she’d hide herself in his boot, but she worries about the smell. It could curl her hair.

Family picture

John, my brother, our pig-farm working tenant, marched us outside to take our picture before Christmas as it had to do with our present. We teased him. “Matte finish” we ordered, “and no white border” we told him. We didn’t have to worry. He developped it and framed it in the lid of a box [...]

Smiles for you…

For those experiencing Marie-Hélène withdrawal, these are for you!

Holidays

We’ve been to Saskatoon and back, for Christmas, for my birthday, for Marie-Hélène’s grandparents… It takes eight hours of driving. And to our surprise, Marie-Hélène was really good.

The roads were bad a good quarter of the way to Saskatoon, which stretched the time to ten hours.

I read a good book with bite-sized chapters, and now [...]

For Sébastien!

Here are our Christmas wishes for Sébastien… with bloopers included. Had we taken ourselves seriously, this clip might only have lasted the 30 seconds it takes Christian to wish our godson presents, good things and great memories… but there are always things that are bound to happen. Like Marie-Hélène sneezing, or Christian mentionning another nephew’s [...]

Am I making a big thing of this?

What? Is this the THIRD time I’ve mentionned I have an exam Friday? Do you know what scares me the most? It’s not the memorization of Prehistoric eras, or the fact that I feel so far removed from university life, or that this is ONE exam and next semester there will be THREE. No, not [...]

Grandma

This is Grandma when she asks me to take a picture of Marie-Hélène… When she says things like: “She’s AD-O-RA-BLE!” or “We don’t love her at all… nope, not at all.” or “I could just EAT her”…

And thankfully, Marie-Hélène doesn’t understand it, because it could all go to her head.

And even if Grandma threatens to [...]
