Sunday

We walked to church on Sunday, as snow gently fell. A neighbor lent us the sleigh for the winter.

Marie-Hélène temporarily forgives the snow and cold for taking away the flowers, and sweater wearing walks.

First snow

Marie-Hélène woke up to snow outside, Winnipeg’s first! She was excited, and so, after breakfast, I dressed her, and went outside with the camera.

I shoveled a path for the mail woman, while Marie-Hélène would stand, then fall, then call for me. Her general impression, is that snow is a mess. “Sale, sale, sale” she’d say [...]

Last week

Was it only the weekend before last weekend that we went to the park? We watched a sunset and pushed Marie-Hélène on the swing for so long, our arms would get tired… So much has happened since then. I’m running to catch my breath. But then, you have to sit still to catch it, you [...]

Marie-Hélène hearts Suzuki

In what seems like the interminable procedures of buying (or trying!) a car, dealerships have learned to cater to children. At Suzuki, Marie-Hélène was particularly attached to this plastic car. “Again” she would sign, as soon as I stopped pushing her around the showroom. And when it was time to leave, she cried as we [...]

Snapshots

Supper last night: A fruit platter from Sobeys, at 9:30. Jasmina, it was your kind of supper! Not my usual fare, but the necessary outcome of an exceptional lack of organisation, the desire to have something healthy and fast (other than salad), and the usual late night class on Wednesdays.
John’s latest antics: Huge 60 hour [...]

Orange

Just in time for Halloween, Christian’s aunt in Montreal sent a box of her grandson’s hand-me-downs. The aunts over here met on Friday to divide the clothes and collectively agreed that the pumpkin suit should go to Marie-Hélène…

Marie-Hélène counts to three

There are those stories that your parents tell every Christmas, when the family gets together… When Anna brings home her boyfriend, he’ll hear it too. It goes something like this. When I was young, I liked playing “school”. (I also liked playing house in the backyard, and we’d fight over who got the nice phone [...]

Sunshine

It is raining, cold and windy here and when Marie-Hélène signs “outside” I sign “cold”. Then we look outside at the leaves and the squirrel burying chestnuts in our lawn. Fortunately, Christian and I have our own cinnamon-toast-breath sunshine with uneven pigtails.

Bookworm

We were invited, yesterday, to a supper in Saint-Malo, just under an hour’s drive from Winnipeg. When I strapped Marie-Hélène into her seat, she signed “books”. “You want your books?” She signed “please”. My heart melted, as it usually does when she’s polite… Then I dug out the three books from the very bottom of [...]

Dog…

Me, in the car, as we’re about to leave: “Christian, do you know where her dog is?”
Christian: “Probably in the trunk, in her bag.”
So we leave. But I still doubt it’s in the bag. But, why check now? We’re leaving! We’re going to his parents for supper! Then… as we’re an hour from the city, [...]
