Toddler in the leaves
In Marie-Hélène’s mind, she’s putting up with the weirdness of her parents throwing leaves on her, as if she’s supposed to like it, dramatically spitting out the ones that fall close to her mouth. THPbbbbbbbbbbbbtt. She’s a good sport.
Swimming with the fish
We thought we’d try those fish-shaped crackers… Marie-Hélène imitates what she learned. Fish open and close their mouth, and it makes a gently hollow buh-buh-buh sound. Then she wanted to see them swim. Hardly two were eaten.
(Thanks Anna, for taking the picture!)
AchOOOOoo
John has the most maddening sneeze. It’s the kind of sneeze that inspired the scene in Disney’s Mulan, wherein the pet dragon, after catching a cold and sneezing in a valley, causes an avalanche. John’s sneezes test the solidity of the Manitoba escarpment. They enter our ventilation system and land on Marie-Hélène’s nose. It’s totally [...]
Petting zoo
On Saturday, we went to a petting zoo not far from our place. If Marie-Hélène is intimidated by the animal, she’ll get close enough to give it a poke, then turn around and beg us to pick her up, quick, quick. When the animal is smaller than her, there’s no problem. Pat the pig. Pat [...]
Happy weekend
The thing about crazy weeks is that they make you appreciate normal weeks, just like sleeping in another bed makes you appreciate more your own… usually.
To matante Simone, back in Montreal today; big kisses from Marie-Hélène!
Reading
I forgot how much I love reading biographies. Yesterday, in an attempt to add some depth to a blog post for Travel Manitoba, I swung by the library to pick up some books on Ernest Thompson Seton. His name was almost a footnote on the province’s website, linking him to Spirit Sands. His biography, written [...]
Counter renovations
Sometime last week, during a phone conversation with Christian, his Mom, hearing we’d come over, said, “Oh good! Jacinta can take a picture of our new counter and put it on the blog!” Before this counter, which is uniformly flat, there was another counter, that was divided in two, a higher part providing a separate [...]
Zoo
On Monday, we went to the zoo with Marie-Hélène for the first time. Seeing Marie-Hélène notice the animals made the trip worthwhile. Everything is a “dog”. Dog elk, dog lemurs, dog foxes, dog rabbits. She looks at me, then at the animal, then back at me, signing, her open palm, tap, tap, tapping, against her [...]
Potpourri
Last night, Christian took us out for supper, to Boston Pizza. I thought it was romantic, because, secretely, I didn’t feel like cooking. Then I said I would pay, since it was his second-last-day of summer holidays. I tracked down the waitress, gave her my card, then, twice, put in the wrong pin. She was [...]
